What do you do when your wife goes into labour whilst you're at work? Go home, of course! But what do you when she goes into labour when you're on ship, in the middle of nowhere, with no sign of going back to port? Call in every favour you can!

We had finished our operations with a rig in the area and were just about to turn for home when we got the most unusual of radio messages... "The wife of one of our crew has gone into labour, so he needs to get home ASAP. Can you help?" Our reply was as short as it was simple "Absolutely!" No sooner had we finished the radio call than the office had been informed and preparations made to get the guy home - The spare cabin cleaned, extra food prepared, paperwork sorted...
Only one question remained. How do we get him from his ship, to ours? We could launch our own fast rescue boat and pick him up, but getting the boat back on-board would be dangerous because of our ships design. Everyone scratched their heads to think of a plan when...
Another radio call! Another ship had heard our conversation over the radio about our predicament and offered to come to the rescue! Not only was this safer for us, the ship that offered to help transfer the guy was a standby vessel - So the crew were expertly trained in using FRC's in any weather... So it'd be safer for everyone.
Less than 30 minutes later our passenger was safely onboard, and we'd starting sailing back to port at full speed to get the guy home before the baby was born.

I'm pleased to say that, even though it took three ships, an oil rig, 5 different nationalities and 50+ sailors, he got home just before the baby was born! The best bit about this little story? Noone charged him, or his company, a penny. Everyone gave their time, their skills, their dedication without expecting or wanting anything in return. It's true that every sailor is part of one big family - Everyone helps everyone else when they need it most.
